Alive and kicking. Get a life

Some months before Michael Phelps swam his way to Olympic immortality with eight gold medals in Beijing he was involved in an unfortunate accident that seriously jeopardized his Olympic dreams. In October 2007, as Michael was getting into a friend’s car in Michigan, he slipped on a patch of ice and fell, breaking his wrist. A cracked wrist meant a plaster cast serious blow to his Olympics preparation. He couldn’t swim for the next few weeks. He was shattered. Was the great eight gold Olympic dream over? All those years of practice, would they come to naught? After his fabulous showing in Athens, Michael had the world’s eyes trained on him-and he was a hot favorite for bagging an unparalleled eight-gold haul. Was the accident the start of the end?

Michael was disillusioned but quickly picked himself up and was back in the pool. With his plastered arm, he couldn’t swim but he would lie in the pool, kicking with a kickboard while his Olympic teammates did laps. He just splashed and kicked away furiously. While that was no substitute for swimming, it had one huge positive. He added incredible strength to his leg muscles.

Fast forward to 16 August 2008, in Beijing. Having won six golds, Michael Phelps was on track to the eight-gold dream. Just two races to go. In the seventh event, the 100 meter butterfly stroke event, Michael was neck and neck with Milorad Cavic. He won by the narrowest of margins, picking up his seventh gold by edging out Milorad by a mere hundredth of a second. That’s right-the margin was a hundredth of a second! As experts analysed the race and watched slow-motion replays, they found that in the last 5 meters of the race, While an exhausted Milorad dragged his legs, Michael used a strong kick to get his hands to the wall first, going ahead by that hundredth of a sec0nd, That strong final kick made the difference Those leg-strengthening exercises paid 0f!

When you are down and in trouble, keep fighting. Don’t give up. Keep kicking. It won’t help to wallow in self-pity, or curse your stars or play the blame game. Every adversity has an opportunity couched within. It is up to us to grab it. And what you do when the going gets tough, is what defines your outcomes.

Perhaps this explains, in a somewhat convoluted way, the origin of the phrase ‘alive and kicking’! Get a life.

Tyrone Bogues: Standing Tall

It probably won’t surprise you to find out that the average height of an NBA basketball player is 6/7″, It s a sport that clearly demands and rewards tall men. Look at some of the all-time greats: Michael Jordan (6’2″), Kobe Bryant (6’6″), Magic Johnson (6’9″), Kareem Abdul-jabbar (7’2″), Yao Ming, the Chinese sensation (7’6″). Each of them has a huge fan following and they have all entertained and inspired millions of young people around the world.

While you are probably aware of the exploits of most of these stars, have you heard of Tyrone (Muggsy) Bogues?

Tyrone was an NBA star too. In a career spanning sixteen seasons, Tyrone was one of NBA’s all-time leaders in assist-to-turnover ratios. Voted as Charlotte Hornets’ Most Valuable Player for several years, Tyrone also held the team record for maximum minutes played, steals; assists and turnovers. Quite an achievement that!

But here’s what really made Tyrone a crowd favourite and an all-time hero. In a world dominated by the tall men who could easily rest their elbows on the hoop, Tyrone was a short guy. In fact, at 5’3″, Bogues was—and still remains—the shortest player in NBA history.

As a child growing up in the bylanes of Baltimore, Tyrone practiced the slam dunk by standing on upturned milk crates. He was short and, though he was passionate about the sport, no one really thought he could ever be NBA material. After all, he was so short! But Tyrone was determined to succeed, and ignored naysayers and sceptics. What he lacked in height, he made up with his speed, stamina and explosiveness on court. ‘I always believed in myself,’ he said in an interview with Sports Illustrated. `That’s the type of attitude I always took out on the floor, knowing that I belonged; that with my talents, my abilities, there’s a place for me out there.‘

Tyrone became a terrific symbol of determination, hard work and self-belief. And he demonstrated how by ignoring your critics, focusing on your strengths and not getting caught up in your limitations, you can achieve your goals. ‘You can’t dwell on what people think you can’t do,’ he once famously remarked.

Think about it. How often do we allow the world around us to decide whether we are good enough? ‘You can’t do this because . . is a refrain we hear all the time And we let our goals slip away because we think we are not tall enough, or rich enough, or educated enough Pick your favorites self-limiting belief!

There are several lessons to be learnt from the life and times of Tyrone Bogues. Focus on your strengths. And not on your weaknesses. Ignore the pessimists and non-believers. Don’t waste time trying to set right limitations.

Focus in your strengths. And not on your weaknesses. Don’t waste time trying to set right the limitations

Marvan Atapatu Inspiring Life Story

It’s a story that Harsha Bhogle, India’s most loved cricket commentator, loves to tell, over and over again. Making his debut in Test cricket for Sri Lanka, Marvan scored a duck in his first innings. And again, in his second innings.

They dropped him. So he went back to the nets for more practice. More first-class cricket. More runs. Waiting for that elusive call. And after twenty-one months, he got a second chance.

This time, he tried harder. His scores: 0 in the first innings, 1 in the second Dropped again, he went back to the grind. And scored tonnes of runs in first-class cricket. Runs that seemed inadequate to erase the painful memories of the Test failures. Well, seventeen months later, opportunity knocked yet again. Marvan got to bat in both innings of the Test. His scores: 0 and 0. Phew!

Back to the grind. Would the selectors ever give him another chance? They said he lacked big-match temperament. His technique wasn’t good enough at the highest level. Undaunted, Marvan kept trying.

Three years later, he got another chance. This time, he made runs. He came good. And in an illustrious career thereafter, Marvan went on to score over 5000 runs for Sri Lanka. That included sixteen centuries and six double hundreds. And he went on to captain his country. All this despite taking over six years to score his second run in Test cricket. Wow! What a guy!

How many of us can handle failure as well as he did? Six years of trying, and failing. He must have been tempted to pursue another career. Change his sport perhaps. Play county cricket. Or, oh well, just give up. But he didn’t. And that made the difference.

We all hear stories of talented people who gave up before their potential was realized. People who changed jobs and careers when success seemed elusive.

The next time you are staring at possible failure or rejection, think of Marvan. And remember this: If you don’t give up, if you believe in yourself, if you stay the course, the run will eventually come. What more you could even become captain some day.

NEVER GIVE UP. NEVER, NEVER GIVE UP !

Share this and make others inspire with his life story…

Karoly: The Winner Mind Set

A Must Read True Inspirational Story

Karoly was a sergeant in the hungarian army. In 1938 28 year old was the country top pistol shooter, having one most major national and international champion ship. He was -by a mile- the favorite to win gold at the 1940 Tokyo Olympic game. then, disaster struck.

At an army training session, a hand grenade accidentally exploded in Karoly’s hand. And blew it away his shooting hand. not only did his entire Olympic dream crash, He also lost a limb.

Why me? Karoly could have been excused asking the question most of us could have asked. You would understand it too if he followed in self-pity, and under stand able reaction for someone after such a tragic, turn of event. You would sympathies with him if he were to become a recluse, a living example of hoe faith can devastated the best-laid plans.

Oh No, not Karoly. He was made of sterner staff.

Instead of focusing in what he has lost-his right hand, his potentially gold metal winning hand- he choose to focus on what he still had. he has mental strength and a mindset of winner, the determination to succeed and yes a healthy left hand. A left hand which, he taught, he could train and transform into the world’s best shooting hand.

After a month in hospital, Karoly went out and, away from the glare of the world, began practicing to shoot with his left hand. Despite the pain his body still reeled under, Despite the strain the left hand had to undergo to also do all that the right hand had earlier done, He stayed focused on his goal : to make his left hand the best shooting hand in the world.

One year later, Karoly resurfaced at the national shooting championship in hungary. His colleagues were delighted to see him. They complimented him on his courage, and his fabulous gesture of coming over to see them shoot. But they were taken aback when Karoly told them that he wasn’t there to see them shoot, he was there to compete with them.

and compete he did. Infact Kalory won the championship. just one year after losing his right hand. He won with his left hand.

Karoly decision to practice quietly, away from scrutiny, was significant. It is easy for people to ridicule you for dreaming big. It is also very easy for you to stay afloat in your misery for a sympathy wave laps at you from all over.

Unfortunately for Karoly, His Olympic dream remain unrealized for a while, as two successive game where cancelled due to the world war.

In 1948, the Olympic came to London. Karoly was chosen to represent hungary in the pistol shooting event. and he won gold. Shooting with his left hand.

Imagine being a gold medal favorite, losing your shooting hand in an accident, at picking yourself up from the shattered mess, training your left hand to shoot as well or better, and going on to win the Olympic gold.

Four year later, Helsinki Olympic. pistol shooting event. who won gold? No surprise here. Karoly takacs.

That is the stuff champions are made of.

We all have moments in our life’s when we seem so close to glory but suddenly loose everything. when it seem that the world is conspiring to destroy us. our dream get shattered. we feel vanquished. Crushed. Beaten. Defeated. and we cried aloud, ‘ Why we ? ‘

When that happen, in of Karoly. Infact, think like him. Don’t worry about what you have lost. Focus on what you still have. Your inner strength. Your mental toughness. No one can take this away.

Don’t loose yourself to self pity. pick your self quickly. Momentum is key. Karoly was back on the practice range a month after the accident. When you are down, Think like a boxer: If you are knock down, you need to stand up in 10 sec or less. one extra second, and its all over.

Set yourself a goal and focus on achieving it. a goal helps channelize the mind and body to work on what need to be achieved, rather than looking back and worrying about past losses, about what might have been. when your minhd is flooded with negative thought, its not easy to wish them away. you need a positive thought- A goal- to replace and vanish negative thought.

Wining a gold medal in pistol shooting is less about the hand, more about the mind. Life’s like that. Wining is less about skill, more about attitude. Skill can acquired, as Karoly demonstrated with his left hand.

When you watch the next game of cricket or football, when you see the winner there, remember to Win something for yourself too.

Remember the Karoly mindset. the winner’s mindset!

We all have moments in our life’s when we seem so close to glory but suddenly loose everything. When that happen, Don’t worry about what you have lost. Focus on what you still have.

Share this Karoly real Inspirational story so that your friend and relatives can also get inspired..

What Would Others Say ??

Mahesh and Praveen, after completing their MBA were waiting for their interview call in a company. Mahesh, being the topper in MBA was called first. One among the interviewers, said: “Being a fresher, you will be offered with a ‘Training Executive’ position and Rs. 10,000/month as your salary. Observing your work and skills we will promote you. Will you accept? “

Mahesh got disappointed and says,” Sir, such a low salary to a MBA topper! If I accept it, what people would say? what my family would think?”

HRA : “Being a topper does not mean that your performance at work will also be great. We are offering you the job after going through your resume, otherwise we always try to escape taking freshers.”

Mahesh : “No sir, I cannot work with such low salary” and he left the cabin. After coming out he went to Praveen and said,” Instead of wasting time here, let’s go back to our home”.

During their conversation Praveen was called for his interview.

Praveen : “I should give my interview, atleast I’ll get some experience”.

After some time he came out happily and told Mahesh that he got selected. Mahesh asked about his salary. He told that it is 8,000/month. Mahesh being astonished asked him that why you have accepted such a low-paid job?

Praveen : “It’s not about money, once I get some experience, salary will also be increased”. But Mahesh showed his pity over him and said that he was mad . He also enquired him that what people would say when he’ll tell them about his salary? What will happen to his status? He warned him saying, “Starting from low salary will hold you down. You will not reach high positions” and also said,” I will only start my career when I’ll get a high position with handsome salary.”

Dear Friends,
Mahesh is still searching for a job whereas Praveen is now at a good position in a MNC. He never thought about money, always worked hard and continued gaining experience.

It is well said that,”If you have experience, wealth will come running after you and you don’t have to chase it”.

Along with this, he was also successful because he never gave a thought about, “What others would think?” If you also follow Praveen’s path, i.e. believing yourself, then with your hard work and experience, you can also transform your dreams into reality.

Never think what others would say . People with negative belief only think like that. Even a research also proves that most unsuccessful people were a victim of disease -“what others would say?”.

If you are also dealing with this serious issue. Don’t worry because it’s easy to escape from this mentality. Before doing any work ask yourself, “whatever I am doing, is it correct?” If it answer with a yes, do it and don’t think about others.

BEST OF LUCK!!!

It is what is inside that counts

There was a man who made a living selling balloons at a fair. He had all colors of balloons, including red, yellow, blue, and green. Whenever business was slow, he would release a helium-filled balloon into the air and when the children saw it go up, they all wanted to buy one. They would come up to him, buy a balloon, and his sales would go up again. He continued this process all day. One day, he felt someone tugging at his jacket. He turned around and saw a little boy who asked, “If you release a black balloon, would that also fly?” Moved by the boy’s concern, the man replied with empathy, “Son, it is not the color of the balloon, it is what is inside that makes it go up.”

The same thing applies to our lives. It is what is inside that counts. The thing inside of us that makes us go up is our attitude.

At present M.Tech counseling is going on many have applied for IIT, IIIT , NIT and others but few are getting calls and fewer will get admission..

Students with high score will go in IIT/IISC, students with avg score get NIT /IIIT, Others with less score go for state colleges .. But is that matter??

Any Institute or degree will not going to decide your life. It is you and only you..

I have came across several people who wasn’t placed in college days than could not score good in gate but now they are in high position ( some had qualify IES , SSC , PSU n other.. ) So just wanna say that keep working hard and be patient. As most of you already have read this sentence

“Success doesn’t mean the absence of failures; it means the attainment of ultimate objectives. It means winning the war, not every battle. “
