On July 25, 2020, IIT Bombay (GATE 2021 exam organizing institute) released following information:

• Dates for the GATE-2021 examination: Due to the Covid-19 pandemic situation, they have spread out the date over a longer duration as 5th to 7th and 12th to 14th February 2021.
• In order to provide an additional opportunity to applicants and improve their performance to secure better career options, eligibility criteria to appear for GATE 2021 is relaxed from the minimum 10+2+4 (ongoing) to minimum 10+2+3 (ongoing). Thus enabling third year students to appear for the GATE examination.
• Till GATE 2020 applicant could write only one subject paper but from GATE 2021 the candidate can now opt for up to two subject papers (from a prescribed set of combinations) that the exam calendar would permit.

• Two new subject papers are introduced: ES (Environmental Science and Engineering) and XH (Humanities and Social Sciences), making the total number of subject papers to 27.

3. Now download Official Answer key from this page Click Here

4. Now just compare your responses with official answer keys to know your marks.

As CE, CS, EC, EE and ME papers held in multi session so in order to justify their level of difficulties and mark distribution GATE committee has arrived at the following formula for calculating the normalized marks.

So the number you got by comparing your responses with official answer keys can be a little bit different.

Before Exam

First of all in order to remain hectic free and calm a proper sleep is important so take a good nap before exam. Avoid heavy breakfast. Don’t forget to carry Admit and Identity Card.

What will be my Strategy against negative marking?

For 1-mark multiple-choice questions, 1/3 marks will be deducted for a wrong answer. Likewise, for 2-marks multiple-choice questions, 2/3 marks will be deducted for a wrong answer. There is no negative marking for numerical answer type questions.

Now if you are facing problem in exam and you are somewhat near qualifying mark please try to avoid guessing answers of other question. In 99% case it will not help you to gain marks.

But yes if you think that you are far behind of qualifying mark, guessing can be an only option for you.

Procedure of making a guess: (Only in worst scenario)

1. Read each option carefully.
2. Try to eliminate as many options you can from the questions.
3. Then make a calculated guess ( try to listen to your instinct)

During Exam

Now while giving exam tries to attempt first that category of questions for which you have prepared well.  Some try to prefer starting from 1 mark questions then General aptitude section then after that 2 marks question and in last Linked or Numerical Answer type question as it is more time consuming.

[Most Important] Some time invigilators of examination room who has responsibility of making us comfortable during exam make noises, do gossip with one another which result in distraction of student. If same is happening in your case JUST STAND & ASK THEM TO MAINTAIN SILENCE IN THE CLASS. Don’t let them disturb you as a distributed mind can result in wrong answers.

(Last Five Year GATE Detail Analysis)

I always give stress on smart work instead of hard work. Preparing for any competitive exam with very vast syllabus requires a little bit of strategy because sometimes if hard work is not done in the right direction, it may lead to an unsatisfactory result.

So today, we are going to discuss all the significant and insignificant topics one must study during GATE preparation. So to find these topics, I will analyze questions of last five years papers, distribute them according to their chapters and find out the average times questions of particular topic came.

So before starting, let’s recall one thing that 15 marks of General Ability and 15 marks of Engineering Mathematics is common for every GATE paper and guys, do not make a mistake of leaving Mathematics because it’s easy and at the same time it covers the major part of the Mark distribution.

So end of this year is nearby and very few months is left for your GATE Exam and in case of final year students your end semester exam is also nearby which make preparing for gate more difficult. So after End semester exam may be you will only get 2 months for preparation.
But if someone follow some basic steps which I am going to discuss here. It will surely help you to optimize your preparation.

1. Printout your GATE Syllabus : If you do not have printed copy of GATE syllabus I recommend you to do so today because a printed copy of syllabus in your study table ( bed 😉 ) will make you continuously realize about covered syllabus and how much is left to cover.
(Advice: Suppose you have completed a topic then underline that topic it will make you happy and encourage you to complete more topics.)

2. Analyze Syllabus : when you have only 2-3 month to go for a highly competitive exam then it become very important to do smarter preparation than just a simple preparation. So in order to make your preparation effective one should know about the most important as well as least important topics.
